Tales of Xillia Detailed In New Famitsu Spread
While no clear scans have been leaked just yet, information from Famitsu multi-page Tales of Xillia spread has been released, and there's quite a bit of interesting information in it, to say the least.
The game will utilize the contrast between light and shadow, which will lead to the game having a different art style direction than Vesperia's anime-style graphics or Graces's watercolor-style graphics (it could be more of a hand-painted or oil painting-like feel if the concept artwork is any indication). Baba stated that when he saw some of the concept artwork images running on actual hardware he was very impressed.
The first bit of info revolves around the game's battles. The double-teaming we say in the trailer takes place during Link Mode, where the character you're controlling is the "master". The other character you are linked to will team up with you to attack, block, etc. the enemy.
Tales of Xillia will use the TP system instead of the CC system featured in Tales of Graces, but there is a slight twist. There is a new Assault Counter ("AC" for short). There isn't too much info on exactly how this works, but it appears it works similar to CC where you can link together Artes until you run out of AC (not clear if this depletes TP at the same time).
As for the game's environments, the team is using the aspect of lighting to differentiate between hot and cold elements, which could be seen to some degree in the different environments in the trailer. The game's field map throws away the traditional overhead view for a different view more akin to games like Final Fantasy XII, with proportional towns and dungeons.
Famitsu also listed five different keywords for the game:
Liese Maxia: As we already said in the previous headlines, this is the name of Tales of Xillia's world. It has spirits, but they need to be in a "solid" form for people to see them.
Spirit Artes: It's similar to our electricity, and as such is used for lighting and powering ships.
The "Spirit" Maxwell: Long-time fans will know about this character, but it's also known as the "Master of Spirits", who has watched over the co-existence of humans and spirits. But the truth about Maxwell has been unknown for a long time. According to Baba in the spread's interview, Mira is Maxwell, which surprises Jude when he first learns about it.
La Sugaru / A Juuru: The names of the two largest countries in Liese Maxia. Both are fighting in a great war against each other, and it appears the latter is a developing country.
We also have some new backstory concerning the two main characters. It appears Jude (15 years old) meets Mira (20 years old) during an incident and admires her. As for Mira, she appears to be able to summon the four spirits. And, as claiming she is a spirit, she doesn't have the need to eat and while possessing great intelligence, she's a bit unfamiliar with human customs and civilizations.
A few other minor notes were also made in the spread. As stated before, both Kosuke Fujishima and Mutsumi Inomata are doing character designs for Tales of Xillia. According to Baba, they will both be doing an even number of designs. ufotable, the new group heading the anime cutscenes, is doing around 30 minutes of cutscenes during the game alongside the game's opening. According to Baba, the game is 60% complete, which could signal a possible Summer 2011 release if there's no unexpected delays.
Tales of Xillia is set for a 2011 release in Japan. No word has been given on a North American or European release.
UPDATE: Scans of the article have been added.
